FDA “Sort of” Lifts Gay Blood Ban

My straight friends are always disbelieving when I report that, as a gay man, I cannot donate blood.

Well, the FDA has said that it is initiating a new policy that gay men who have not had sex in a year can now donate – which brings the U.S. in line with other countries.

The Associated Press reports:

The nation’s three-decade-old ban on blood donations from gay and bisexual men was formally lifted Monday, but major restrictions will continue to limit who can donate. The Food and Drug Administration said it is replacing the lifetime ban with a new policy barring donations from men who have had sex with a man in the previous year. While the one-year-ban has been criticized by activists it matches policies in other countries, including Australia, Japan and the U.K

  1. Honestly it is still discrimination out of ignorance what about heterosexual people who donate blood but are not abstinent for a year. To me it is still a ban and sexual policing
