Leave It To Bryan Fischer To Bring Gay Hate Into Malaysian Plane Crash

Bryan Fischer is no stranger to equating every ill of the world to LGBT equality. Now, he decided to comment on Obama’s “politicizing” the Malaysia Flight MH17 crash by politicizing with LGBT hate on his Twitter account.

If he’s so Christian, he should be ashamed of himself

Sadly, 100 AIDS Researchers Perished on Malayasia MH17 #AIDS2014

While we see more ramifications of the shooting down of Malaysia Flight MH17, one of the losses is noted researcher Dr Joep Lange. Dr. Lange was a clinical researcher who had been working on HIV since the early years of the virus, participating in clinical trials and training in developing countries. Via Australia’s ABC:

The president of the International AIDS Society says the shooting down of flight MH17 has cost the world a giant in the field of HIV/AIDS research.

About 100 of the 298 people killed on the downed Malaysia Airlines jet were heading to the AIDS 2014 conference in Melbourne, including researchers, health workers, activists and people living with HIV.

IAS president and Nobel laureate Francoise Barre-Sinousi has told the National Press Club in Canberra the loss of life is difficult to comprehend.

“We are all with our phones waiting for confirmation and hoping that it cannot be confirmed,” she said.

Next of kin are still being informed, but Dutch HIV researcher and former IAS president Dr Joep Lange and his wife and collaborator Jacqueline van Tongeren are among those killed.

“It will be a great loss for the HIV/AIDS community,” Professor Barré-Sinousi said.

“It will be a terrible loss for all of us. I have no words really to try to express my sadness. I feel totally devastated if it is confirmed.

“This is really someone special. It’s a giant for us.”

Professor Barré-Sinousi said she worked closely with her predecessor.

“He is the man with the spirit, I used to say the best spirit, which is really he has been trying forever for his life to give for the benefit of mankind.

“A great professional but more than that, a wonderful human being.”

This will likely strike a huge blow to the AIDS/HIV research community and it’s scary to think of the impact on advances in AIDS/HIV research.

And that is something to mourn.

Watch: AIDS Film ‘Test’ Covers The Importance of Living

While ‘The Normal Heart’ is a huge hit on HBO, a new film ‘Test’ presents characters in 1985 San Francisco who do not have the disease but live in constant fear of it.

Writer/Director Chris Mason Johnson tells Gawker:

“Is this story worth telling?” “Who’s gonna care?” “You didn’t suffer enough,” are things that went through Johnson’s head as he was writing this, he told me by phone last week. Johnson, who was in his teens and living in San Francisco at the time that this movie is set, is HIV negative and thus worried that he didn’t “have anything to say in this dialogue.” But as the ongoing conversation about Truvada has shown, HIV is not just an issue for gay guys who are positive. It’s something that affects all of us, regardless of serostatus, and it’s something we all need to care about.

The film is coming to pay-per-view and selected theaters this month. Check out the trailer below.

A Personal Story: The Boy On The Bus Crush #NSFW

This is a blog post I’ve been meaning to write for awhile. However, the circumstances around it deeply affected me to the point I can only write about it weeks after I found out what happened to the boy from the bus.

In the late 1970′s, I was an in-the-closet (and far from being out) 13-year-old who had this insane and unexplainable crush on a classmate name Jim Rideout. We rode Bus 9 together from the rural area where we lived to the junior high just outside of town on a daily basis. Jim was a beautiful and energetic boy who had one of those bodies at 13 that was worthy of any 17-year-old twink. His blonde hair, surfboy looks, tall frame and toned body was all I needed to get those butterflies sturring in my stomach every time I sat next to him on the bus.

It wasn’t until years later that I reconciled my own feelings with sexuality and identified why I had butterflies on Bus 9. For decades, I was always interested in finding Jim to determine if he had been as gay as I now thought he was.

Recently, I began scanning old photos and posting the resulting albums to Facebook. When I took a close look at the picture above, I noticed Jim hanging out of the window above my bowl haircut and horrific polyester blue shirt (yes, that’s me in the middle of the two lovely girls). He always wore sporty soccer shirts and was as gorgeous as any teenager can be.

Jim’s wave and the look off into the distance compelled me to do some research to figure out where he is. What happened to him. Did he come out of the closet.

What I discovered wasn’t the outcome for which I had hoped.

After some web sleuthing, I learned that Jim left Maine and headed to San Francisco to attend college in 1984. By then, he was 18 and left his 14 siblings to start life in the gayest city in the world. All this was from a full bio on Wikipedia:

kurt marshall

Kurt Marshall (birth name James Allen Rideout, Jr.) (November 13, 1965 – October 10, 1988) was an actor who performed in gay pornographic films in the mid-1980s. Although he appeared in only four films, the gay pornographic industry trade publication Unzipped named him one of the top 100 gay porn stars of all time in 2006, author Leigh Rutledge listed him as the ninth most influential gay porn star of all time in 2000, and adult film magazine editor John Erich called him one of the “most beautiful” gay adult film stars of the 1980s.

Early life

Kurt Marshall was born James Rideout, Jr. in Waterville, Maine, one of 15 children. After high school (he graduated after lettering in swimming and track and field), he attended San Francisco State University, but never finished. He said in several interviews that he performed in adult film in order to earn money for college.

Adult film career

In 1984, at the age of 18, he starred in his first film, Matt Sterling’s ‘Sizing Up,’ with fellow gay adult film star Mark Miller. His role was that of a star track and field athlete, which echoed his high school sports experiences. A historian of gay erotic film called Sizing Up a “superior example of [a] gay porn video which make[s] gay men visible in places where they have mostly been invisible…” He made three films the following year, all for Falcon Studios: The highly influential ‘The Other Side of Aspen II,’ ‘Splash Shots,’ and ‘Night Flight.’ The Other Side of Aspen II was Falcon’s first film which was shot entirely on video, and Marshall worked with legendary gay adult film performer Scott O’Hara. O’Hara later wrote in his autobiography that he was not in the least attracted to Marshall, although much of the film was later edited to make it appear as if he was having an intense sexual experience with him and two other blond men. Adult Video News (AVN), the adult film industry trade publication, later rated the film as the ninth most innovative and influential gay porn film of all time in 2005. His second film, Splash Shots, was credited with making sex around the swimming pool a gay porn trope.

Assessing his career, Unzipped magazine editorialized that “the films he appeared in were noteworthy.”

Marshall, an admitted drug user, tested positive for HIV in 1986. He came out to his family that same year and entered a drug rehabilitation program. He moved to San Diego, California in 1987, but returned to Los Angeles later that same year, and worked in the construction industry. He died on October 10, 1988, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. The official cause of death was kidney failure due to substance abuse and AIDS.

So there it was. Life and death. My teenage crush was gay as I suspected. But learning that he was a victim of the AIDS crisis brought me to tears. It explains why he disappeared off the face of the earth. It reminds me of the many gay men of my generation who are lost forever. It destroys me to think of lives not lived.

Why would someone I barely knew – a school girl crush, even – affect me to the point that I had to take a time out from work for several hours to process?

As you can see from the NSFW image above, he was beautiful. But, when we were 13, he made me recognize sexual feelings in a way I will never forget. Jim was part of my evolution as a gay man.

35 years later, I have learned who I am and realize that in spite of occasional letdowns in life, I have nothing to complain about. Everything turned out ok. Finding Jim is a reminder of the horrors of AIDS on our community that come out of nowhere when you least expect it and grab our balls in a really sharp and painful way. It’s easy to hibernate our fears and sorrows of a bygone era. Finding the boy on the bus reiterated them in a painful way.

Fortunately, inspiration does seep its way out of the story. Here is Jim a.k.a. Kurt quoted in one of his numerous interviews as a porn actor in the 1980s:

“I think to be gay is to be blessed. We have so much freedom, so many choices. This isn’t our moment to party or to think we’re going to stay young forever…maybe it’s our time to find someone to be safe with…to be happy with…”

Thanks, Jim, for a reminder of how lucky I am. I just wish you had found your own someone with whom you could be safe and happy. I wish I had been your friend.

Here’s Kurt in his first porn:

RIP, Jim Rideout.

Is Antibiotic Resistance the Next Global Health Crisis?

This is scary news, and is being compared to the global AIDS crisis (see related stories below):

The World Health Organization issued another warning on Friday about the dangers posed by antibiotic resistant bacteria. U.K. newspaper The Daily Telegraph said that without new drugs to fight them, common infections will surge as a leading cause of death in a health crisis that will eclipse the AIDS epidemic.

In the organization’s first global overview report on antibiotic resistance, Dr. Keiji Fukuda, WHO’s Assistant Director General for Health Security, wrote, “Without urgent, coordinated action by many stakeholders, the world is headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can once again kill.”

The “achievements of modern science” are at stake, Fukuda said, as everything from current treatments for urinary tract infections to pneumonia in infants to kidney dialysis become obsolete.

“This is not an abstract problem,” he wrote. “We have a big problem now and it is going to get bigger.”

Dr Danilo Lo Fo Wong, Senior Adviser Antimicrobial Resistance at WHO Europe, said to the Telegraph, “A child falling off their bike and developing a fatal infection would be a freak occurrence in the U.K. but that is where we are heading. Antibiotic resistance travels with infectious diseases and infectious diseases travel around the world. Whatever good is being done in the UK and elsewhere it can be made redundant by a lack of action elsewhere in the world.”

Watch: ‘The Normal Heart’ Trailer Is Amazing

I remember that when the AIDS Crisis became a crisis, I was in high school in Maine. I was deeply in the closet and located miles from any gay community so the disease existed in the abstract with no context for us ’80s teens. That was until my friends and I were heading to Ft. Lauderdale for Spring Break in 1984 and our parents expressed concern about us staying in a hotel with a possibility that gays with AIDS might swim in the hotel pool (and infect us). I am not kidding. I guess they believed that any hotel called the Jolly Roger (I’m not kidding, here, either) must be stock full of diseased gays.

While this story has humorous undertones, it represents how misunderstood AIDS was during the early 1980s.

Check out the newest trailer for HBO’s ‘The Normal Heart’ above. It conveys the misunderstanding and fear of the disease during that era. The cast is top-notch and I can’t wait to watch this film.

The HBO original film, ‘The Normal Heart,’ premieres Sunday, May 25th at 9PM/8C.

Today In Wingnuttery: AIDS Patients Should Sue Groups That Promote Safer Sex

The logic that spews from religious wing nuts is sometimes so non-sensical that you wonder if they have an issue with mental illness. Case in point.

In a post on Matt Barber‘s website, infamous anti-Kinsey activist Judith Reisman today declares that AIDS patients should file a class action lawsuit against “condom pushers” because the FDA has never approved condom use for anal sex:

The reality is that condoms are manufactured and approved every day for natural, vaginal sex, not anal “sex.” They are not effectively designed to protect from disease those people who engage in sodomy. Such a lawsuit should target the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Planned Parenthood and a myriad of teachers and school systems, too many to count, that have taught that anal “sex” (traditionally termed “sodomy” or “buggery” under British-based legal codes) as not so different than natural coitus. The result of a class action suit should be the requirement of a label, a la cigarette packs, that states: “This condom has never been approved by the FDA for penile/anal intercourse.” Due to the lies that have told, people who practiced sodomy are under the tragically mistaken notion that a condom is effective protection from disease. Those who have believed this lie and have contracted AIDS or an STD (and the loved ones of those who’ve lost their lives) have a cause of legal action.

Watch: HBO’s Latest Trailer for ‘The Normal Heart’

The HBO original film about the onset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York City, ‘The Normal Heart,’ premieres Sunday, May 25th at 9PM/8C, only on HBO. I am really looking forward to the film, despite it being a star-studded extravaganza.

Cocaine May Increase HIV Risk

Before you roll up that bacteria-infested $20 bill and snort “just one more” as the sun rises, you may want to think about more than a potential heart attack. A recent study reveals that cocaine use may make users more susceptible to HIV infection:

The new study, published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, reports that researchers found that cocaine makes CD4 T-cells more easily infected by HIV. Additionally, coke boosts the spread of the virus through the cells:

The researchers separated inactive, or “quiescent,” CD4 T-cells from healthy adults and then put them in an environment with cocaine. Researchers then infected the cells with HIV. They compared the rate and mechanism of the HIV infection in the cocaine-affected cells to CD4 T-cells that were exposed to HIV, but not the drug.

After three days, they discovered that cocaine made it easier for T-cells to be infected with HIV.

John Wherry, deputy editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, said to Medscape that other studies have linked cocaine with a higher risk of contracting HIV. This study was unique because it was able to find a specific cell type that is typically not infected by HIV and show how cocaine weakened it.

“Patients with histories of substance of abuse, particularly cocaine, may need to be watched a little bit more carefully (because) their overall decline in CD4 cell counts might happen either faster or might happen in a way that actually predisposes to the development of AIDS at perhaps a higher CD4 count than others,” Wherry said.

This is bad news especially if your hole becomes a cum dump at an orgy. Be careful out there.
