No Immigration Equality: LGBT Couples Excluded from Bill

With all the movement forward with marriage equality, it is a knock back into reality when our rights in other areas are crushed. The latest immigration reform bill:

Same-sex couples should expect to be excluded from immigration reform bills that likely will be unveiled this week, says a top immigration reform activist, Immigration Equality Executive Director Rachel Tiven.

“We are not expecting LGBT families to be included in the Gang of 8 bill,” she told the Washington Blade‘s Michael K. Lavers during a conference call yesterday. “That in our minds means that of course the bill is incomplete,” Tiven added.

The Gang Of 8 includes Republican U.S. Senators John McCain, Jeff Flake, Lindsey Graham, and Marco Rubio, and Democratic U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer, Michael Bennet, Dick Durbin, and Bob Menendez.

Immigration equality is another critical right for LGBTs as many multi-national couples are seeing a partner deported – a tragedy when one considers that some of these couples have children. Let’s hope the “Gang” gets its act together.
