Chris Matthews talks with Alan Simpson (former Republican Wyoming Senator). “We have homophobes in our party. That’s disgusting to me. We’re all human beings. We’re all God’s children. . . . I’m not sticking with people who are homophobic, anti-women — you know moral values while you’re diddling your secretary, while you’re giving a speech on moral values. Come on, get off of it.”
Why isn’t this guy running for president?
I am probably closer to Simpson politically than Obama. VERY socially liberal but more fiscally conservative – and I’m NOT wealthy. And I am an atheist. I always take a macro view of economies and believe in capitalism WITH regulation. The bullshit from Republicans about regulations hurting businesses and barely taxing corporations is unforgivable – while the middle class and poor move more toward the “pheasant” category and serve the newly-classed “unlimited political funding” corporate America. It’s not the economics that scare me. It’s the greed. Plain and simple. Greed. Fed by a culture of capitalism.
That’s where economics collides with reality. That’s what confuses us all. In theory, the economy should work but, alas, it does not. In economics, you always discuss the “ideal world.” Well the world is random and when combined with greed becomes outright dangerous.
That’s where we’ve been for most of the past 100+ years when Standard Oil ruled the US. When Sinclair Lewis’ The Jungle led to awareness and outrage that changed our corporate culture for the better. But, without World Wars to bond us, we have moved back to the 1890′s.
Thank goodness for logical public servants like Alan Simpson. Watch the video below…and doesn’t he look annoyed at being pulled away from his multi-million retirement home? Enough said…
And I love this quote about the video on Huffington Post:
“When a respected conservative like Alan Simpson states the obvious, it should inspire Democrats to do something that would make people like him applaud. Regrettably, too many Dems hold their fingers to the wind to weigh the political consequences of such action.
A little testicle fortitude on the left’s part would be a welcome touch.”
