…and my stomach is churning. Today is Election Day. In Maine, same-sex marriage, which was approved by a vote of the state legislature in May 2009, is up for a “People’s Veto” today. Known as the “Yes on 1″ referendum, the polls have shown an even split for voters leading up to today. The news is good with voter turnout exceeding 35% — the more voters who show up, the more likely it is that same-sex marriage will become a reality in Maine.
The marriage equality folks have outspent the anti-gay groups and much more grassroots efforts have taken place than did with California’s Prop 8. With the same groups involved, much of the advertising was recycled. I do know that Mainers don’t appreciate out-of-state “flatlanders” all that much. I do know that native Mainers, although they may agree or disagree with a proposed law, resent outsiders telling them how to vote. Combine that with the many lies about “homosexual marriages being taught in schools” and that gay marriage will disrupt civilization as we know it, I am hoping anti-bigotry prevails.
If you are in Maine and reading this, get out and vote “No on 1.” Our freedom and civil rights depend on it. A loss for marriage equality in Maine today will set us back tremendously and we will see repeals of marriage equality in other states (through a public vote process).
