Fag: is it a word anyone can use?

James Hipps from Gay Agenda took on a morning radio show host today over the DJ’s use of the word “fag” in his broadcast (James was listening in his car while driving and phoned in). His email to me sums it all up:

“I got into it with Bubba the Love Sponge (a nationally syndicated radio show host) over the use of the word “fag”.

Check out the recording of it. It gets really heated…to put it mildly!”

I personally have not heard the word “fag” used in any positive context and as James says in the call, it’s use is usually accompanied by some gay person having the living shit beat out of them. Bubba should have just apologized and let this go but for some unknown reason (probably ratings), he tries to talk his way out of it by affirming that he is “pro-gay.” I’m sorry – just because you are straight and support gay rights does not give you the right to use the word.

Sorry to sound preachy but there are certain words that I associate with hate and “fag” is one of them. And it deserves no place in anyone’s vocabularly.

um, i don’t mind people using the word fag, sorry everybody else who disagrees. whether they are straight or gay themselves, if they are not saying it to hurt someone else, i feel fine when people use it. it takes away the shock value and makes it more difficult for people to use it to be mean and hurt feelings. if people used it more in everyday language in a nice way, it would diffuse the word’s power.

Context, context, context….Among ourselves (LGBTQ)when the F word is used as self reference, usually in a sarcastic, self defacing way it can be nuetral, or even intimate. It is somewhat like the way the N word is used in Rap music and how some non white people of color use the N word in and amongst themselves.

I see it as a similar because non LGBTQ people have been using it for hundreds of years to oppress and harrass LGBTQ people, to beat, kill and maime us. My understanding of the reason people started to reference us as the F word was after they started burning us as bundles of sticks along with the witches and heretics they burned during the crusades.

I found the fact that someone on this “Bubba” show started calling you a “Pussy” because you were offended and called in to the show and then started to refer to you as a female even more disturbing. IT IS NOT OK! If they are so gay friendly why would they continue to use language that we say hurts us?

Used by someone outside the (LGBTQ) community the F word is NOT FUNNY! I have had enough of it! Instead of rallying around the next “Will & Grace” TV Homo Promo, do we need a 24/7 channel that displays the photo’s and videos of those LGBTQ people that have been harrassed, attacked, beaten to death, emotionally tortured to the point of killing themselves for these people to “GET IT” and have some compassion for us?

I wanted to leave this comment at the “Bubba” website, but couldn’t find the place to vote or comment on the use of the F word from the link that is posted on the gay agenda website.

This is a free country Orwell. Fag and other words you personally find offensive can be used at will and should be without one having to worry about the thought police sirens screaming around the corner.
