Today I turned 43. With the exception of an oncoming cold and several hours in the office, I am enjoying my day. I think of where I was a year ago and I am in a much better place personally, which makes me exponentially happier. First and foremost, I am truly in love. Really. Now that I have a context about what being in love is all about, I realize that I wasn’t before. I can’t explain what it feels like – it just is. Maybe you know what I am talking about!?
Second, I am preparing to ride in AIDS/Lifecycle, which will take any excess weight right off me and put me in tremendous shape. I have strong legs from years of cross-country, track and roadbiking several centuries, so I have a good start. I even have my red dress for the day of the ride where we dress in one.
Third and finally, I have quit smoking (in prep for #2 and to improve my health). It’s been long in coming but this time I’m doing it. Maybe I am more successful this time because of all the previously listed reasons I am happier. Both my birth parents died of lung cancer from years of smoking so I am sure quitting will be even more beneficial for my overall health.
2008 just sucked for me. I started the year getting a DUI (which, when said and done, cost me about $15,000 and destroyed me financially – I will spend 2009 rebuilding my finances), dealt with a break-up intermingled with bouts of severe depression and self-destructive behavior, and worked my ass off in my job. I will not miss it at all.
As Chad Fox says, it’s time for a new season of the Dan Show. I am rich with friends (as witnessed by the scores of birthday greetings over at my Facebook page) and full of hope and potential. And with that said, we welcomed 2009 with a bang (well, at least our bare asses). Check out my evening below.
Nick Natoma hosted us at his pad where we had way TOO much champagne and wine.
We also had a bunch of cute boys to hang out with, including by sweetie Rich and Michael from Try Not to Panic.
Usually reserved and watching us all drink, Michael stepped right up and followed us to Chaps 2 (my fave bar in case you didn’t know) where we got him to do shots and strip.
And show his ass.
So, I am happy to say: 2009, here I come. Watch out! Oh yea, Happy Birthday to me!

I hope this year brings back the serenity and peace that 2008 destroyed. Now we know what NOT to do, you can focus on what TO DO. Ride that bike and don’t smoke, and love the one you are with. It can only get better from here don’t you agree? As long as you behave yourself and you maintain contact with that power greater than yourself and you use the map you were given. Consult it often and be kind to others on the road with you. They are there to teach you something about themselves and about you.
